Welcome

A house of stone, salt and sun

Solar do Sal is a boutique guesthouse set beside the Salinas de Rio Maior — the ancient inland salt flats that have produced fleur de sel for more than eight centuries.

Behind a sun-warmed terracotta facade you will find seven rooms and suites, a pool framed by water features, an indoor jacuzzi and Turkish steam room, and a glass conservatory where the morning begins quietly with breakfast.

It is somewhere to slow down. To swim, read, eat well, and step out the door into a landscape that hasn't changed in a very long time.

The Village

A village frozen in time

A cluster of 19th-century wooden salt huts, lovingly converted into artisan shops, cafés and tavernas.

Cobblestone path between 19th-century wooden salt-storage huts in Marinhas do Sal village, beside the Salinas de Rio Maior

The salt flats are surrounded by rustic timber buildings — original salt storage huts with traditional wooden locks — that now house shops, bars and small restaurants. Walking through Marinhas do Sal feels like stepping back in time.

Artisan Salt Shops

Browse flor de sal, flavoured salts and handcrafted salt-based souvenirs sold directly from the producers in weathered wooden cottages dating from the late 1800s.

Cafés & Restaurants

Several small eateries and taverns line the paths between the salt pans — traditional Portuguese cuisine seasoned with salt harvested just metres away, plus local wines.

Local Crafts

Pottery, handmade jewellery and antique finds in the small shops tucked among the salt-pan paths.

Seasonal events

JUL
Festa do Sal

Salt festival with historical recreations, live music and entertainment.

DEC
Presépio de Sal

A unique Christmas nativity scene made entirely from salt.
